Long Sands Beach

property via drone

Long Sands Beach is the longest stretch of sand on the York Beach coastline, about a mile and a half of open Atlantic shoreline running north from the Nubble Lighthouse to the heart of York Beach village. Anchorage Inn sits directly across Long Beach Avenue from the beach. Step out the door, cross the road, and you are on the sand. No parking hunt, no driving, no logistics, just a beach day that starts the moment you wake up.

Steps Away

The beach is wide at low tide, revealing long sandbars and tide pools that draw families with kids. At higher tides, it narrows but still leaves plenty of soft sand to spread out on. The northern end frames the Nubble Lighthouse beautifully, one of the most photographed angles of the lighthouse anywhere, and the long open expanse gives you a real sense of distance that is rare on the densely developed stretches of southern Maine coast. Surfers tend to congregate near the south end, where the breaks are most consistent, and Liquid Dreams Surf Shop sits a short walk from the Anchorage Inn for boards, wetsuits, and lessons.

Long Sands has its own daily rhythm. Sunrise on the beach is the quietest, most photogenic moment of the day. Locals tend to walk it at first light, and the long open horizon makes for spectacular early color. Sunset light hitting the Nubble Lighthouse from the south end is its other signature view. At low tide, the exposed sandbar is wide enough to walk on, with tide pools forming in the rocky outcrops. Pack water shoes for the rocks, sun protection for the long unshaded stretches, and a windbreaker for the afternoon ocean breeze.

A Note From the Ramsey Family

We have been welcoming guests to the Anchorage Inn for over 40 years. York Beach is our home, and we love sharing it with families who come back year after year. Many of our guests return season after season, and that is the greatest compliment we could ask for.

Day 1 What To Do

Dinner in Ogunquit

Head out from the Anchorage Inn for the 12-minute drive to Ogunquit. Arrive early for dinner in Ogunquit village or at one of the Perkins Cove restaurants, both just a few minutes from the theater. Budget a little extra time on summer Saturdays when traffic on Route 1 can be slower.

Arrive at the Playhouse

Pull into the on-site parking lot and arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the curtain. Pick up a drink, find your seats, and take in the atmosphere of one of New England's most iconic summer theaters.

Showtime

Depending on the performance day, evening curtains are at either 7:00 or 8:00 PM. Each show runs roughly two to two and a half hours with an intermission.

Head Home

12 minutes back to the Anchorage Inn along the coast. A simple, easy end to a genuinely great night out.

Best Time to Visit Long Sands Beach

Long Sands Beach is open year-round with no entry fee. Lifeguards are on duty during peak season from late June through Labor Day. Parking along Long Beach Avenue is metered at $4 per hour during the summer season. Anchorage Inn guests skip that entirely with on-site parking. Water quality monitoring runs weekly from June through September, with results posted by York Parks and Rec.

Best Light

Sunrise is the most photogenic and peaceful time on the beach; sunset from the south end frames the Nubble Lighthouse perfectly

Weather

The beach is open year-round; shoulder season visits in May, September, and October offer a quieter, windswept Long Sands with far fewer people

Avoiding Crowds

Early mornings and weekdays are the calmest; July and August weekend afternoons are the busiest stretches of the season

For Photographers

The north end of the beach frames the Nubble Lighthouse from a distance; sunrise and sunset are both exceptional for wide coastal shots

Note

Dogs are welcome before 8:00 AM and after 6:00 PM during the Memorial Day to Labor Day stretch; rules relax further outside the summer enforcement window

Let's Plan Your Trip Together

Sunrise Walk

06:00

Step out of the Anchorage Inn and cross Long Beach Avenue for the most peaceful moment the beach offers all day. Walk the full length of Long Sands at first light -- locals are out, the horizon is wide open, and the Nubble Lighthouse catches the early color from the south end.

Morning Swim

09:00

Lifeguards are on duty from late June through Labor Day. The beach is wide at low tide with long sandbars to wade on and tide pools forming in the rocky outcrops at the edges.

Surf Lesson

10:30

Head to Liquid Dreams Surf Shop for a board rental or a beginner surf lesson. The south end of Long Sands has the most consistent breaks and is where most surfers set up.

Lunch Break

12:30

Head to Sun & Surf, just steps from Long Beach, for a casual oceanfront meal with the Atlantic right outside the window. It is the easiest lunch on the beach strip, no car, no fuss, back on the sand in under an hour.

Afternoon on the Sand

14:00

Back on the beach for the afternoon. Low tide in the afternoon often reveals the widest stretch of sand ideal for a long walk north toward York Beach village or south toward the Nubble.

Sunset at the Nubble

18:00

Walk or drive the 6 minutes to Sohier Park for golden hour at the Nubble Lighthouse. Then head back to Anchorage Inn for dinner as the sky fades.
