Short Sands Beach
Short Sands is the family-oriented beach at the heart of York Beach village, a short crescent of soft sand wrapped by the village's restaurants, ice cream stands, and amusements. From the Anchorage Inn, it is about a 4-minute drive or a 30-minute walk along Long Beach Avenue and through the village. The compact scale is part of its appeal. The beach, the playground, the village, and the historic Goldenrod taffy shop all sit within a few hundred yards of one another.

The beach itself is roughly a quarter-mile of fine sand backed by Ellis Park, the small grassy waterfront park managed by York Parks and Recreation. The park has public restrooms, basketball courts, a playground, picnic spots, and a gazebo that hosts free summer concerts on weekend evenings. Lifeguards are on duty daily from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM during peak season, typically late June through August. At low tide, the rocks along the cove's edges become a working tide pool, a quick, kid-friendly nature lesson with crabs, periwinkles, and small fish in the warming pools.
The village setting also means Short Sands works well outside of pure beach weather. On cloudy or windy days, you can still walk the village, get ice cream, ride the amusements, or duck into the shops along Railroad Avenue. The southern end of the cove is more sheltered, and the sand stays usable into the shoulder seasons, spring and early fall, giving you a quieter, atmospheric York Beach without the summer crowds.

- Works in any weather, even on cloudy days, the village, shops, and amusements make it worth the 4-minute drive from the Anchorage Inn.
A Note From the Ramsey Family
We have been welcoming guests to the Anchorage Inn for over 40 years. York Beach is our home, and we love sharing it with families who come back year after year. Many of our guests return season after season, and that is the greatest compliment we could ask for.
Day 1 What To Do
Dinner in Ogunquit
Head out from the Anchorage Inn for the 12-minute drive to Ogunquit. Arrive early for dinner in Ogunquit village or at one of the Perkins Cove restaurants, both just a few minutes from the theater. Budget a little extra time on summer Saturdays when traffic on Route 1 can be slower.
Arrive at the Playhouse
Pull into the on-site parking lot and arrive 30 to 45 minutes before the curtain. Pick up a drink, find your seats, and take in the atmosphere of one of New England's most iconic summer theaters.
Showtime
Depending on the performance day, evening curtains are at either 7:00 or 8:00 PM. Each show runs roughly two to two and a half hours with an intermission.
Head Home
12 minutes back to the Anchorage Inn along the coast. A simple, easy end to a genuinely great night out.
