One of the Maine Things To Do While You're in York | Anchorage Inn

Every York, Maine vacation starts with a few ideas. Maybe you've already mapped out the beaches you want to visit or the sights you don't want to miss.

And lobster? That's probably already on the list.

So instead of eating it once and calling it a Maine tradition checked off, why not make a little more of it?

One of the best Maine things to do while you're in York, especially when you’re staying at the Anchorage Inn, happens around the dinner table. Spend a few days exploring the local seafood scene, and lobster can become its own vacation experience. Start with a classic lobster roll overlooking the water. Save another night for the crackers-and-drawn-butter experience of a whole lobster. Grab an easy lobster dinner after the beach. Then mix things up with lobster pie, bisque, or another local favorite.

There's no rush to fit everything into one afternoon. Spread it out over a few days, and every meal becomes another part of your York experience. Consider this your starting point for a lobster trail of your own.

Stop #1: A Lobster Roll with a Nubble View

A lobster roll is a pretty good place to start.

Fox's Lobster House has welcomed visitors since 1966, and its location across from Nubble Lighthouse makes it an easy first stop during your stay. Find a table overlooking the water, order a lobster roll, and take your time. With one of York's most recognizable landmarks right across the way, this is a lobster stop that's as much about the setting as the meal.

Then comes the fun decision. Their signature Fox's Favorite Lobster Roll is lightly tossed with mayonnaise, while the Nubble Style lets warm butter do the talking. Both feature generous pieces of fresh tail and claw meat tucked into a toasted New England-style roll. Around here, people have opinions about which way is the right way. Trying both is one way to settle the matter for yourself.

The reason to stop: This is the lobster-roll-and-lighthouse experience, ideal for kicking off your trail with two York essentials at once.

Stop #2: The Roll-Up-Your-Sleeves Lobster Dinner

Save another evening for the Maine lobster experience that requires a little more commitment. Cape Neddick Lobster Pound has been serving fresh seafood for decades, and this is where many visitors decide to go all in. A steamed Maine lobster arrives with drawn butter, corn on the cob, coleslaw, and a dinner roll. Plus, plenty of napkins.

Nobody looks graceful eating a whole lobster, and nobody seems to mind. Crackers are passed around the table, empty shells slowly pile up, butter inevitably ends up somewhere it wasn't supposed to, and dinner conversation carries the night away.

Feeling a little adventurous? The baked stuffed lobster and lobster sauté offer another take on the classic. But if cracking claws and pulling apart a whole steamed Maine lobster is on the vacation agenda, this is the night to do it.

The reason to stop: This is the full traditional lobster dinner, best saved for an evening when nobody's in a hurry and getting a little messy is part of the plan.

Stop #3: Lobster After Long Sands

After a full day at Long Sands Beach, there's something to be said for keeping dinner simple.

Sun & Surf Restaurant is located just across the street from Anchorage Inn. It’s one of the easiest places to enjoy another taste of Maine without having to climb back into the car, deal with summer traffic, or hunt for another parking spot.

The menu keeps things classic. Order a boiled Maine lobster served with drawn butter and a lemon wedge, or stick with a lobster roll filled with fresh knuckle and claw meat on a brioche roll. Sometimes that's exactly what sounds good after a day in the sun.

The reason to stop: This is your easy beach-day lobster fix. Long Sands, lobster, and a walk back to Anchorage Inn without moving the car.

Stop #4: Go Beyond the Lobster Roll

For the last stop, branch out from the traditional lobster dinner and explore a few different preparations.

Lobster Cove Restaurant is a fitting final stop thanks to an “Everything Lobster” section that lives up to its name. Alongside classics like steamed lobster and lobster rolls, you’ll find lobster mac and cheese, lobster pie topped with lobster bisque, and a traditional Maine shore dinner.

The reason to stop: This is where you mix things up and explore one of the widest selections of lobster dishes on the trail.

One of the Best Maine Things to Do Is Right Here in York

York may be known for its beaches, but there's a lot more waiting here once you shake the sand off your feet.

It's also a destination for great Maine seafood, with lobster served everywhere from tables overlooking Nubble Lighthouse to casual spots within walking distance of Long Sands Beach. Spend a few days here, and lobster doesn't have to be one dinner you check off the vacation list. It can become part of how you experience York itself.

Somewhere between a lobster roll overlooking Nubble Lighthouse and the last dinner of the trip, you may have created a new York vacation tradition of your own.

Book your stay at Anchorage Inn and discover how a few great lobster dinners can become one of the highlights of your time in York.
